The perspective. Out of it comes an image. Both incomplete.
In this series, I delve into the complex interplay between perception and reality, exploring how Western travelogues have historically shaped the image of Persian leaders. These narratives, often penned by outsiders, paint portraits that are both vivid and incomplete, reflecting a blend of fascination, misunderstanding, and cultural bias than often comes from perception of separation.
Each piece in this collection is a dialogue between the seen and the unseen, the known and the unknown. By drawing directly from the pages of these travelogues, I aim to capture not only the physical likenesses but also the layered interpretations that have been projected onto these figures. The resulting images are intentionally fragmented, inviting viewers to question what is omitted and why.
How are narratives constructed and whose voices dominate them? What happens when we view the other or ourselves through a lens that is not our own? How do these perspectives shape our understanding of leadership, identity, and power?
